"An emotionally powerful and intimate musical about two New Yorkers in their twenties who fall in and out of love over the course of five years, the show's unconventional structure consists of Cathy, the woman, telling her story backwards while Jamie, the man, tells his story chronologically; the two characters only meet once, at their wedding in the middle of the show." -Music Theatre International

What is different about this production?
Because this production is part of a FTT senior thesis project exploring the impact of gender on the audience's perception, this is not just an ordinary staging of The Last Five Years. For this production, the full show will be performed as it is originally intended with the traditional casting (Jamie as male and Cathy as female; with a run time of about 80 minutes), and then a brief intermission followed by a few excerpts of the more heated or pivotal moments in the show with gender inverted casting (Jamie as female and Cathy as male; for around an additional 30 minutes). In addition to the swapping of gender roles, the two productions will be used as a kind of experiment to understand the audiences' experiences with and thoughts about the piece and the characters, and how that does or does not change with the gender inverted casting. This research will be done through online surveys to be conducted before, during, and after the performances.
